Belsize Park Area Guide

Posted on Friday, May 31, 2024

There are many words to describe Belsize Park: cosmopolitan, sophisticated, charming and delightful are just a few.

Located a stone’s throw from central London, nestled between two idyllic green spaces and bustling with boutiques, markets, galleries and restaurants, there’s no wonder so many people are drawn to it.

Belsize Park’s ‘off the beaten track’ vibe has been beloved by celebrities for decades, but it also retains a robust sense of community.

Families looking to put down roots here are spoiled for choice when it comes to schools, while the excellent transport links get them to the heart of London in minutes. It’s the ideal location for families, office workers and entrepreneurs.

As experienced estate agents, we understand exactly what makes Belsize Park tick, and why buyers, vendors, tenants and landlords are always enchanted by properties in this wonderful part of London.

Our award-winning estate agency - the appointed Guild member for NW3 - offers up-to-the-minute, informed and unbiased advice to help you find your perfect property.

Between Hampstead and Primrose Hill

Belsize Park is in the London Borough of Camden. It is bordered by Hampstead in the north and west, Gospel Oak and Kentish Town to the east, and Primrose Hill to the south. It’s easy to see why it was originally dubbed ‘bel assis’ in French, or beautifully situated.

The site itself dates back to medieval times when the Manor of Belsize and parkland built to go with it was left to monks in the 1300s. During the 17th century, Belsize House was rebuilt and became a pleasure garden for concerts, dancing, hunting and racing.

In the 1800s, Belsize House was demolished but more grand houses sprang up in the surrounding area, attracting wealthier residents from in and around London. Some of these period homes are among the properties for sale and rent in and around Belsize Park.

By the 20th century, the local area had completed the shift from farm land and country mansions to the pleasant leafy suburb our estate agent team knows so well today.

A village in North West London

One of Belsize Park’s greatest draws is Belsize Village, a hidden gem of a neighbourhood, located where Belsize Lane and Belsize Terrace meet.

Its array of independent boutiques and good-quality restaurants, as well as several distinctive mews properties, make it a popular destination for people looking to escape the city.

Belsize Park has long been home to celebrities. You may find yourself rubbing shoulders with a famous face, while happily soaking up the quintessential feel of the local cafes and restaurants.

Like them, many people come for the shopping, linger for the delicious coffee and pastries, and end up staying for the properties.

Out and about in Belsize Park

Belsize Park and the local area takes in everything from the serene landscape of Hampstead Heath to the hustle and bustle of Camden Town.

Belsize Park has wide, tree-lined avenues that are bordered by a blend of Victorian, Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts-style buildings.

There’s an enticing combination of both period and contemporary houses and flats that cater for all tastes and budgets.

As experienced Belsize Park estate agents, we know there’s something to please everyone in this enchanting part of North West London.

Green spaces

Whether you’re an avid dog walker or love a Sunday morning stroll with the family, Belsize Park is the ideal place for anyone in search of green spaces.

Rolling Hampstead Heath and the breathtaking London cityscape of Primrose Hill are right on your doorstep.

There’s also the delightful Regent’s Park and South End Green in the surrounding area, as well as Belsize Wood, an exhilarating Grade II-listed nature reserve.

The flavours of Belsize Park

There’s a continental feel to Belsize Park’s high street, where the wide pavements and shady trees make enjoying an al fresco coffee an everyday treat.

If you fancy something stronger than caffeine, local pubs such as The Holly Bush and The Horseshoe offer a warm and friendly welcome.

The local area has a wide variety of restaurants, from popular chains to the independent restaurants of England’s Lane. We recommend the seasonal menu from Franco Manca and the New York-inspired Chez Bob.

Shopping in Belsize Park

Belsize Park has lots to offer anyone who loves retail therapy, from High Street names to indie boutiques, where an array of interesting products are sold.

Literary fans take note: as well as a fantastic bookshop, Belsize Park community library holds regular talks and readings from a range of writers.

Take a walk up Haverstock Hill to browse its markets, hop into Camden during the sales for fashion-led brands, or explore the choice of boutiques, markets and galleries in Hampstead Village.

Transport links to Belsize Park

Belsize Park has an Underground station on the Northern Line, which means it is situated just minutes from central London.

Swiss Cottage is a short walk away on the Jubilee Line, as is the Hampstead Heath overground station in South End Green.

There is also a 24-hour bus service to Oxford Circus.
